Attractive Corporate Positioning: Leadership Culture Without Mind Games

It starts with wanting to be successfull and content as an entrepreneur.

“I am proud of my company, my employees like working for me. We are well off. We are perfectly positioned in the market and well prepared for the future. The enterprise value has developed satisfyingly and I don’t need to worry about succession”. This is how a content entrepreneur would sound like, isn’t it?

To reach this state in a situation where there are plenty of offers and a shortage of qualified applicants, companies need a clear positioning. The corporate culture must be based on fairness, openness and respect. In such a culture, there is no place for mind games.

How to Recognise Mind Games


As an entrepreneur, you seldom witness mind games personally. However, there are several indicators which point to a climate of manipulation within your company:

  • A rising number of complaints both from managers and staff. Dissatisfaction seems to be the general state of mind.
  • Managers and/or staff feel they are being mobbed and they articulate that feeling.
  • Members of staff walk by with hunched shoulders, doing only work to rule.
  • There is an increase in mutual accusations, sick leaves and fluctuation.
  • You receive the according feedback from your managers: “In my team it feels like things don’t run smoothly”


If you are experiencing these or similar situations in your company, it is time to act! Not only will the number of warnings and terminations without notice rise – so will also the cost for labour court proceedings and severance payments. In addition to that, your company will be less attractive for new members of staff and management.

What Can Be Done?


First of all, it is important to sensitise management and staff to the issue, for example in lectures and workshops. For that to be successful, you need to have a clear stance on the topic: “This is not the way we want to treat each other in our company!” However, such a statement only works if you act on it – and quickly at that. Your employees need to know that you truly care for this issue.

Encourage respectful interaction by engaging in discussions on eye-level.
